Hobbits' World Mailing List FAQ

A mailing list is a way to automatically send the same message, or email, to a number of people at once, and it can be configured so that when someone responds to the message, that reply goes to all of the same people.  It can be a great way of letting a group communicate with other members of that community or group. When not overused mailing lists are a great tool for community building.

When overused, or abused they can be very annoying to most of the members of the community being served.

Moderated and un-moderated mailing lists

What is a Un-moderated mailing list ?

An un-moderated mailing list is one in which messages sent by anyone who is a member of that list, is sent automatically to all of the other members of the list.

What is a moderated mailing list ?

A moderated mailing list is one that all messages first go to a moderator, or administrator for review, and only after being approved are they sent to the members of that list.

What is a member ?

To receive messages on a mailing list you need to be subscribed to that list, anyone who is subscribed to a list is called a member of that list.

How do I become a member of a list?

You become a member of a list by someone subscribing your email address to that list, or by going to a website and requesting membership.

How do I get off a list ?

On a responsible system the operators provide a method, usually the same location where you subscribe, to un-subscribe yourself from the mailing list. If no method is provided to get off a list then you are not a list member, your are being spammed, spam is really involuntary membership on a mailing list. information about how to unsubscribe from the Hobbits' World mailing lists is provided below

Is there any other way to change my membership?

You can also make such adjustments via email by sending a message to:  Hobbits-request@hobbitsworld.com with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the quotes), and you will get back a message with instructions. You must know your password to change your options (including changing the password, itself) or to unsubscribe.

How can I find out what my password is?

Normally, Mailman will remind you of your www.hobbitsworld.com mailing list passwords once every month, although you can disable this if you prefer.  This reminder will also include instructions on how to unsubscribe or change your account options.  There is also a button on your options page that will email your current password to you.

How is all this Magick Stuff done.

Hobbits' World uses an open source (free) software package called MailMan to provide mailing lists, if you are interested in the technical details you can visit the support site for this software by clicking HERE, we will be adding more information about MailMan to our Training Center page in the near future. If you have any questions about how to set up, or use our mailing lists just drop a line to jayc@hobbitsworld.com

Can I have my own Mailing List?

Within limits, yes.  If you need a mailing list for some reason just drop a note asking for it, would appreciate knowing what you will be using it for.  Spam is against the law, and we will not create mailing lists for purposes of spam. If we create a mailing list for you we will make you the administrator for the list and you will need to do your own maintenance on it. Help is generally available if you run into problems.
