Hobbits World Email & WebMail FAQ

How to set up and use Email and Web Mail on Hobbits' World

How do I get an email address ?

Just ask for it, unless someone else already has the user name you want, you can have pretty much any user name you want, your address will be something like
Your_User_Name@HobbitsWorld.Com, when you ask for an account it will save time if you also provide the password you want to have for the account. I will set up the account and let you know when it is ready.

Ok I have an account, how do I use it

There are two ways to use an email account, you can access it from a local email client on your computer (Email) or you can use a Web Browser to send and read email (Webmail)

Ok, How do I do Email

You have to tell the email client that you use how to use it, I am mostly familiar with Microsoft Outlook so can probably help out if you run into any problems. Generally it is very simple to set up mail reception using or POP3 server, but you may run into problems with outbound service. This is because the ISP you are using may have outbound traffic on Port 25 blocked to prevent spam from originating on their system. In this case you point your recieve side at the Hobbits' World POP3 server, and you have to use the ISP's outbound mail server for sending mail. If you already have multiple email accounts on your machine you probably will have no problems.

That sounds like it might be too complicated, how do I use Webmail ?

Webmail is pretty straightforward:

  • Point your Web Browser to http://www.hobbitsworld.com/webmail, and you will get to a login screen, enter your full email address Your_User_Name+HobbitsWorld.Com, and your password. Please notice that you must use + between your username and hobbitsworld.com rather than @. this is to help foil the email spammers.

  • You will be taken to a screen where you can select between using squirrelmail or horde as your web client. At the moment only Horde is working, which is cool as I never liked squirrelmail.

  •  Click on Horde and you will be taken to your mail control panel, it is pretty self explanatory, click on mail then new message to send email, or on inbox to read your mail and so on.

You can visit the support section on the Horde website http://www.horde.org/  if you run into problems, or just ask for help in one of our forums.
